See clearer after cataract eye surgery

When new glasses, stronger bifocals and better lighting no longer help your vision, it may be time for cataract eye surgery.  But what exactly is a cataract?  Basically, it is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens.  This lens lies behind the iris and pupil and works like a camera lens.  It focuses light onto your retina.  Most people use cataract eye surgery as a last resort to improving their vision.

A cataract is often formed by protein clumping together and creating a cloud over a small area of the lens.  Over time, it grows and covers more of the lens which in turn deteriorates your vision.  When your ability to function day to day is impaired enough, it may be time for cataract eye surgery.

Cataract eye surgery is a fairly simple procedure and relatively painless.  It is also extremely successful in restoring vision.  It is the most highly performed surgery in the United States with over 1.5 million procedures performed each year.  It is estimated that 9 out of 10 patients regain very good vision after surgery.  During surgery, the clouded eye lens is replaced with a plastic intraocular lens – it sounds complicated, but it is rather simple.
